I think I used to be able to lay on a beach non-stop. I’d go eat, grab some food, but I was content just napping or listening to a book. Now it’s hard for me to sit around on a vacation. While I enjoy a beach vacation, I am more of a city vacation girl. If I’m choosing a beach, it’s gonna be in Charleston or Lake Tahoe. With all of that said we went to Hawaii. Hawaii is beautiful and expensive. My mom’s dream has always been to go, so we took her, and we had an amazing time. We stayed at the Fairmont Kea Lani. I would definitely recommend it. The others down the strip from it also looked great.
The time difference from Minnesota is 5 hours, so we definitely felt it. We’re early to rise, early to bed people anyway though, so it wasn’t that bad.
The resort had daily activities and great food!
Our 2nd full day we woke up early and took the Road to Hana. Here’s the full recap of that.
A lot of people recommended the sunrise above the clouds in Haleakala. You do need a reservation, which you can get here.
You NEED warm clothes. Every site I saw said that, and they weren’t lying. We left our resort at 3a.m., and it was the most amazing sunrise of my life. It was dark when we got there, and the stars were incredible. It was also hard to see where the best spot to stand would be. If you get in the first parking lot, and walk up to the observation deck-you go to the left.
However, when we parked, there were rocks across the parking lot from that observation area, and I almost wish we stayed there. We did go over after the sunrise and got pics there. There isn’t a bad place to be though. They recommended to bring something warm to drink and food as well, so we brought food.
Another very special thing is as the sun rises, everyone is completely quiet except a park ranger that does a Hawaiian chant. It’s so amazing.
We ended up getting bored again on a different day and added some fun stops to our trip. We visited the Iao Valley. It was stunning-you do need a park reservation for this as well, but that was much easier to get.
We went to Makawao. They had the cutest shops!
Tavares Beach to see sea turtles!
Some of the food we tried:
The Cinnamon Roll Place was amazing!
The shave ice from Ulani’s. The line was long, but it goes quickly and is good. That’s mochi on top!
A lot of places recommended South Maui Gardens for food trucks. Heads up there’s another food truck park with a similar name, and it’s not as good. We went for breakfast (Blue Door Bread and Pizza Company), and it was AMAZING! We
Also there, the Da Green Coffee shop was amazing!
How fun! My sis is getting ready to go to Maui in a couple of weeks. I’ll just have to vacation vicariously through you and her! Thanks for sharing, beautiful photos and it’s so nice that you took your mom. Maybe I can nudge my kids…. 😀
